Tabacón Hot Springs and Lake Arenal
While the Arenal Observatory Lodge's own attractions make it the ideal place to stay, guests may be tempted to venture down the hill for day trips to Lake Arenal - Costa Rica's largest lake - or the Tabacon Hot Springs, each only 20 minutes away, and each worth exploring. For sport fishermen, Lake Arenal fishing features the hard-fighting guapote, a local variety of rainbow bass. If you're a windsurf aficionado, Lake Arenal wind boarding is some of the best in the world, with strong, steady winds year-round. Or explore the lake in a kayak or canoe, surrounded by verdant forests and pastureland, not to mention the imposing Arenal Volcano itself on the east end of the lake. Alternatively, head off to the Tabacon area and the Tabacon Hot Springs for a relaxing hot soak in volcanically heated mineral spring pools at the base of the Arenal Volcano.
