The access road to reach Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa is a public road that is also the same route to the main entrance of Arenal Volcano National Park, and several tour companies. It is a beautiful drive through pastureland and rainforest that gives you peeks of the Arenal Volcano, and lets you see wildlife along the way … if you slow down and pay attention.
The road is mostly gravel and dirt, and like any public road in Costa Rica, it is maintained by the government. Well-preserved bridges cross over bubbling streams, but the gravel and dirt road, with wear and tear and Costa Rica’s weather, can often turn into washboard bumps with dips and holes – all the more reason to slow down to enjoy the views! The road is repaired periodically, and when it is, the ride is much smoother; however, the condition still deteriorates over time.
When the public road ends at our entrance gate, you will again drive on excellently maintained concrete and asphalt roads within the Arenal Observatory Lodge property.
