At Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails, sustainability is not just a goal — it’s a core part of who we are.

That’s why we’re proud to have renewed our contract with the Payment for Environmental Services (PES) program, led by FONAFIFO (National Forestry Financing Fund). This initiative rewards those who actively protect natural ecosystems through financial compensation.

Our agreement covers 174.6 hectares of tropical rainforest within our property — an area that remains in excellent conservation status, with untouched forest cover and remarkable biodiversity. By safeguarding this land, we directly contribute to carbon capture, water resource protection, and the conservation of native plant and animal species — concrete actions in the fight against climate change.

But our commitment goes beyond passive preservation.

Each trail that winds through our protected areas offers an immersive, educational experience. As guests walk among centuries-old trees and observe wildlife in its natural habitat, they gain a deeper understanding of why conservation matters.
Additionally, we:

  • Participate in strategic reforestation efforts
  • Promote environmental education among staff and visitors
  • Champion a model of sustainable and conscious tourism

Our partnership with FONAFIFO reaffirms our environmental responsibility and positions us as a benchmark in aligning conservation with economic development

We truly believe responsible tourism can — and should — generate long-term positive impact.
