If you’ve visited Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails, chances are you’ve met one of our most charming residents — the coati.
In Costa Rica, locals call them “pizotes.” The coati (Nasua narica) is one of the most recognizable rainforest animals in Costa Rica, known for its long ringed tail, curious personality, and social behavior.

What Is a Coati?
Coatis are part of Costa Rica’s iconic wildlife and are frequently spotted in the Arenal region. They are known for:
- Long striped tails held upright while walking
- Elongated snouts used for foraging
- Climbing ability
- Moving in social family groups
They’re often seen along rainforest trails, near forest edges, and occasionally exploring lodge gardens.
A Special Friend at Arenal Observatory Lodge
We admire this fascinating rainforest animal so much that we named our cozy café after it: Cafetería Coati.
Located with breathtaking views of Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal, the café offers a relaxing space to enjoy Costa Rican coffee, fresh pastries, and a well-deserved break after exploring the trails.
The name reflects our deep connection to Costa Rica wildlife and conservation, celebrating the biodiversity that makes Arenal one of the top nature destinations in Central America.
