“In early February 2026 I was fortunate enough to lead a group of writers on a creative writing retreat to Arenal Observatory Lodge. It was a fabulous week, and such a great experience that many of the writers are hoping to return next year.
Our mornings began with a hearty breakfast in the dining room, and many writers paused to watch the many bird species on the feeder outside the main building. After than, we began our creative writing workshops. Some of the workshops were held in La Casona, the large building where many of our writers were living. This overlooks Arenal Lake, but we did out best not to be distracted by the magnificent views! We also held workshops in the museum building, in a comfortable room overlooking rainforest.
After a relaxing lunch together, our writers took advantage of the many sightseeing opportunities available at Arenal Observatory Lodge. We walked the many trails on the property, visiting waterfalls, hanging bridges, pristine rainforest, tropical gardens, frog ponds and the cattle farm. Along the way, we saw so many animals and birds! Toucans were a regular sighting, as well as coatis, agoutis and peccaries. The eerie sound of howler monkeys accompanied us as we climbed to the top of the viewing tower, and one writer even spotted an ocelot! We also took part in the free nature walks and natural history talks, and some writers relaxed each day in the pool and hot tub. There was so much to do – and when we felt like writing, there were endless beautiful places to sit and write.
Each evening, our group had dinner together in the restaurant. The meals were varied, with a separate menu for vegetarians, and the waiters were all extremely friendly as they got to know our group.
Arenal Observatory Lodge was the perfect place for a week-long creative writing retreat: serene and peaceful, with ideal locations to write and plenty to do between our writing workshops. The staff were kind and friendly, and eager to do whatever they could to make our week a success. They even delivered us chocolate covered strawberries at the end of the week – it’s little kindnesses like this that make such a difference.
We have already made arrangements to hold a second creative writing retreat at Arenal Observatory Lodge next year, and we hope to continue doing so for many years to come.”
